A journey on foot to the wildest, most remote part of the Ecuadorian Andes. A trip designed for experienced backpackers seeking a true backcountry adventure in the Andes of South America.
We are the only company offering this trek to this incredible area. When we did the initial reconnaissance years ago the locals shook their heads in disbelief. If you enjoy physically challenging days and the rewards that come with traveling on foot to remote wilderness then this is the trip for you. |
"Andean Traverse" Itinerary: Day 1...Arrive in the capital city of Quito nestled amongst volcanoes at 9,200 feet where Untamed Path will be there to greet you at the airport. Day 2...Morning in Quito to organize our expedition and acquire any last minute items, change money, etc. In the afternoon depart for the trailhead where we stay at a comfortable and rustic old hacienda at 10,200 feet. Usually time for an afternoon walk in the local countryside to help adjust to the altitude. Day 3...Begin our ascent into the high Andes. The route winds it's way up to a valley nestled beneath a jagged and active 17,500 foot volcano. Mules carry the bulk of our gear to helps us further acclimitize, camp at 12,800 feet. Day 4...Ascending further to gain the high ridge route that will take us through a wild and untracked lake district. This first day with full packs is also the toughest elevation gain day headed for camp at 15,000 feet. Days 5 - 7...Traversing a stunning ridgeline with views of lakes, waterfalls and high mountains in all directions. Simply the finest alpine scenery in Ecuador. The hiking becomes more moderate traveling mostly off-trail through the "Paramo" where we've never encountered other people, not even locals! Day 8...Coming out of the backcountry into an isolated farming valley passing through a Quechua village where colorful traditions and a simple, slower pace of life still exists. Our vehicle awaits to take us back to the comforts of Quito and a celebration dinner at our favorite restaurant. Day 9...We drop you off at the airport for your flight home with a head full of memories and some new found friends. If you are staying on in South America we can help point you in the direction of further learning and adventure. |
